Episode 25: Rowing solo across the Atlantic Ocean with Zara Lachlan
Could you spend 97 days rowing across the Atlantic alone like this week's guest? In this inspiration-filled episode Emma is joined by Zara Lachlan who recently became the first woman and youngest person to row solo from Europe to South America, a phenomenal achievement. Setting off from Lagos on the Portuguese Algarve on 27th October 2024, the 21 year old spent 97 days alone at sea, rowing 4,000 miles to reach French Guiana on 1st February 2025. Effervescently passionate about rowing, Zara shares all about her epic journey, from being hit by flying fish, seeing orcas and dolphins, to capsizing, a near miss with a ship and rowing in circles through the Canaries. Zara talks about why she took on the challenge, where her grit and determination comes from and what she’d do differently, which proves to be a remarkable answer. She also shares how she trained for the row, what she thought about being in the open ocean alone (and with no music!) plus what it’s been like returning to land, and the impact of her row on her daily life now. She’s passionate, frank and funny, and her story of mixing purpose with perseverance is incredibly inspiring. This is an episode you won’t want to miss!
