Episode 21: The truth about tea with Rosh Gammampila
In this festive special episode, Emma is joined by Rosh Gammampila of the Devagiri Tea Estate. First bought by her grandfather in 1947, Devagiri was struggling but in a turn of fate, Rosh was visiting the estate with her partner when they realised it was in dire need of help. Rosh and her partner decided to buy it and move their corporate London life to Sri Lanka two years ago and focus on tea. Rosh takes us through the story of tea in Sri Lanka, and how a tea leaf ends up in our cup. She explains the inequitable supply chain which tea makers are faced with and shares her hopes of a farm to table process instead. It’s an incredibly eye opening conversation about the story of one cup of tea, the entire work force and global supply chain behind it, and what needs to be done to enact positive change. Rosh is also spreading Christmas cheer in the UK, Devagiri work with Crisis UK to support 50,000 cups of tea to homeless people over the holiday season. The story of Devagiri and Rosh is incredibly inspiring and thought-provoking. It will make you think twice about what many of us take for granted, a cup of tea. Be sure to have one in your hand when listening to the episode.
